This is a continuation from the pinned post “The Salvation Timeline.” Before we proceed, this is just a theory and quite possibly God is keeping it shrouded in mystery and what the bottom line is that we don’t want to be left behind, so we take the appropriate action for salvation.
The first resurrection occurs just before the 2nd coming of Jesus and the wrath of God. The dead and alive in Christ are in this (“the chosen ones”) and it is written in 1 Thess 4:16-17. None of them worshipped the beast or his image.
Acts 24:15New International Version (NIV)
15 and I have the same hope in God as these men themselves have, that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked.
Some religions believe in a paradise earth during the 1000 years. Some believe that it is a wasteland and occupied by Satan and his angels and no human form of life exists.
Satan is released from his prison after 1000 years to deceive the nations and those outside the Holy City are consumed by fire (Rev 20:8-9). Also a question was posed as to who are those consumed by fire and if the 2nd resurrection could occur in 2 parts. Some believe that those consumed by fire are those left on the earth at the end of the 1000 years. Others believe that everyone in the 2nd resurrection are consumed by fire but that begs the question as to who is resurrected in Rev 20:13.
The sea and Hades give up the dead for the final judgment in Rev 20:12-15. Those not found in the Book of Life are cast in the lake of fire.
One must be in the Book of Life to enter the Holy City (Rev 21:27).
Food for thought:
2 Peter 2:1-4New International Version (NIV)
False Teachers and Their Destruction
2 But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. 2 Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. 3 In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping. 4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell,[a] putting them in chains of darkness[b] to be held for judgment;
Here are verses 5-9
And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly; 6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly; 7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: 8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;) 9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:
2 Peter 3:7-13New International Version (NIV) –
7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. 8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.[a] 11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.[b] That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.
Revelation 20:7-10King James Version (KJV)
7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, 8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog, and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. 9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. 10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
Revelation 21:1-4New International Version (NIV)
A New Heaven and a New Earth
21 Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,”[a] for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’[b] or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
So what we have at the beginning of the 1000 years is the earth is laid bare (NIV). At the end, Satan is released from his prison, the Holy City comes down from heaven and those outside of it are consumed by fire. Then the old earth is destroyed and a new heaven and earth is in place.
The teaching of Paradise Earth: At the end of the 1000 years, the bible says those outside the Holy City are consumed by fire (Rev 20:8-9). 2 Peter 3:10 says the earth is laid bare. If anything, “Paradise Earth” would have to occur after the final judgment (the 1000 years is supposed to be a period of peace so it will start out as a wasteland and it might morph). The Holy City starts in heaven and the chosen ones are in it. The very few that survive the Final Judgment in Rev 20:15 would be in it at the new heaven and earth.
There are two possible scenarios:
- Those not part of the first resurrection lay in wait for 1000 years.
- There are some that survive the Wrath of God. This is probably a more likely event given some are taught of a “paradise earth” after “Armageddon” by certain religions (Biblical Unitarianism, Jehovah’s Witnesses and splinter religions, and Armstrongism).
Scenario 1. The earth is totally void of life. So what happens during the 1000 years? The Holy City is still in heaven. The devil is in the bottomless pit (“chains of darkness”, Tartarus). Those that died before are awaiting resurrection (as far as it is known, there is no resurrection happening during the 1000 years).
So who is present in Rev 20:8-9? This scenario raises too many questions given that the sea and Hades give up the dead in Rev 20:13. It makes no logical sense that the entire population of dead not in the first resurrection are raised at this time because then the sea and Hades would be completely empty.
The false prophets and the beast are already in the lake of fire when Satan is thrown in and that is written in Rev 20:10.
It is quite possible that the second resurrection could be two waves. The first wave would be those that have the mark of the beast or are truly wicked, and they would be consumed by fire in Rev 20:8-9 (Rev 19:20 would indicate this). The second wave would consist of those that led a righteous life but may not have been exposed to formal Christianity, those that may have found God during incarceration, those that live in a country where certain formalized Christian religions are prohibited, those in a situation where they cannot attend a worship service of sorts in certain religions (such as those in nursing homes), and any others; these would be the ones given up in Rev 20:13.
Revelation 14:10-11King James Version (KJV)
10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: 11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.
Scenario 2 with those that survive the Wrath of God. This would be much less complicated. What is known at the outset of the 1000 years is there is going to be a lot of carnage. The earth is laid bare. Like mentioned in the pinned thread, those taught that it would be Paradise Earth would be in for a surprise, the Armstrongists would expect it, those that thought they would be in the first resurrection are wondering why, and the remainder would be grateful to be alive. It is doubtful that there would be very many religious leaders left and some would believe that they were part of the first resurrection. During this time frame people would still die and people would be born and it is likely that those left are descendents of the survivors and they have a clean slate (haven’t been deceived yet).
Rev 14:12-20 would hint at a possibility of life during the millennium. There may be a limited (very few and in remote areas, most likely) number that survive. The earth would initially be a wastleland.
Revelation 14:12-20King James Version (KJV) 12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. 13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them. 14 And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man, having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle. 15 And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the time is come for thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe. 16 And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth; and the earth was reaped. 17 And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle. 18 And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe. 19 And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God. 20 And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.
Hebrews 9:27King James Version (KJV)
27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
Would the Millenium be a direct accession to the lake of fire? This is a new thought. God would allow those who were taught about “paradise earth,” and were alive at the time of the Wrath of God, to survive, PROVIDED they led a Christian way of life and did not deny Jesus Christ. The rest would be those that didn’t know any better and basically led a good life. Remember there is no evil during this time period. It is possible the first and maybe a few succeeding generations would just go to the common grave and wait until called in Rev 20:13. The ones that are deceived by Satan at the end of the 1000 years would probably be the first inhabitants of the lake of fire.
So what is happening down in Hades during this time? Only God would know. Luke 16:19-31 is the story of the rich man who died and experienced a burning. This opens up the possibility of a pre-judgment torment.
So what the bottom of all of this is that the final “white throne” judgment occurs after this.
