The basics:

Revelation 21:8King James Version (KJV)

But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Revelation 14:10-11King James Version (KJV)

10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:

11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

Revelation 20:10King James Version (KJV)

10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

Revelation 20:14-15New International Version (NIV)

14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

(Note: NIV is used for Rev 20:14-15 since “hell” has 4 definitions in KJV: the Abyss, Tartarus or “chains of darkness in 2 Peter 2:4, Hades, and fire).

Revelation 21:8King James Version (KJV)

But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

The spectrum ranges from JW in that it is a symbolic place, some in that it is a spiritual fire pit, and the Fundamentalist belief it is literal.  Most Unitarian, 7th day Adventist and Armstrongist belief is that the 2nd death is mere destruction. The remainder believe in an immortal soul that is either has eternal torment or eternal life.

Satan and those with the mark of the beast (separate topic) are tormented eternally and that is biblical.  Satan is also a spirit being.  How many have heard of “selling one’s soul to the devil” in return for fame and fortune? How many watched the Twilight Zone episode of the crook whose punishment was basically having his every whim catered to?

Obviously death and Hades would be destroyed.  A non-indivual can’t be tormented.

The fate of the “goats” was in the topic “Immortal Soul/Eternal Torment.”
